Ella and Luke are growing up so fast and learning new things every day. Their minds are like sponges–soaking everything up.

They still love to "read" and "write."

And they like to ride their stick horses like wild cowboys/girls.

Ella adores jewelry and shoes. She can't get enough of them. "Accessorize" should be her middle name.

Luke loves anything electronic–like his little laptop. But he prefers the real thing in Daddy's office.

Luke has become my little parrot. I've come to realize the phrases that I overuse. My overused phrases are his new phrases. Here's a sample:

'scuse ooo (translation: excuse you)
Explanation: that's what he says when he burps, I guess because that's what I've said so many times when he burps.

'old jew (translation: hold you)
Explanation: when he wants me to hold him. Again, because that's what I've said for months now when he comes and holds on to my leg, Do you want me to hold you?

daddyzat wuk (translation: daddy's at work)
Explanation: he really got used to Clifton being home (with his bad back) and cried the first few mornings Clifton went back to work. Now, the first thing he says when I get him out of his crib, is not, Hi Mommy, but Daddyzat wuk, because he knows Clifton has already gone to work.

notton yur handz (translation: not on your hands)
Explanation: they love to color, but they always try to color on their hands instead of the paper, so what do I say? Not on your hands. They've probably heard it a thousand times.

its white (translation: that's right)
Explanation: When I tell them "no" they often repeat it back and tell me, "No!" So then I say, "That's right!"

elwa's ka-wy-ing (translation: Ella's crying)
Explanation: none. :)

Ella's got some of her own tricks these days. She's become a whiz at removing her shoes, socks, bows, and hair ties while in the car. So by the time we get where we're going, I have to spend a couple minutes finding where she threw the items in the car and then put her back together. I won't be surprised if one of these days she gets her shirt and pants off too!

She still loves to dance. Anytime she hears music, she starts wiggling. We play the demos on our player piano and she gets down. She's got Luke into it too.

I just taught them how to hold hands and dance together. Luke loves it. He's always chasing Ella to get her hands, mostly so he can pull her around. Sometimes Ella goes with it, and sometimes she wants to do her own thing. It's pretty funny though. They have a good time. I love that they're finally starting to enjoy playing together, instead of just enjoying taking toys from the other one, though they still do that too.

Still no new teeth and Luke's had all his for months!

The best part about January was Luke and Ella got another cousin! Hannah Teleysha Smith was born to my brother, Jason, and his wife, Teleysha. She's a sweetie! Ella will have someone to drag around and dress up in a couple years. And, Mark and his wife announced that they will be having their first boy in June! So, Luke will have another little cousin, along with Royal and Jared, to play cars with soon. I can't believe how much the family is growing. It's such fun to see all the little cousins grow up together!

I know nobody is surprised (I'm sure not), but December has also come and gone without a single post. Again, here are some of the highlights (and lowlights). Prepare for picture overload.

Clifton's back "went out" the day after Thanksgiving and has still yet to return. He was down on the couch or in bed for about 2 weeks straight, some days crawling just to get around. I knew he was going a little stir crazy from being cooped up at home when he asked if I could drive him to Wal-mart. He usually hates Wal-mart and shopping in general. I asked him how he planned on getting around the store. And he said he planned to drive their little scooters with the tiny basket in front. It was a pretty pitiful situation. We went to a couple doctors, got an MRI, and found out his back was as messed up as we thought. He's had a little bit of improvement, but not back to normal at all. He still limps quite a bit and feels pretty crappy by the end of the day. Walking around for more than 15 or 20 minutes just about does him in. He started going to physical therapy. From what I hear, it's not fun. It's hard to tell if it's helping right now. But, he faithfully does his stretches every day. We're keeping our fingers crossed. (FYI, this was the aforementioned lowlight with no pictures to document his pathetic state. So, I thought I'd throw in some cute pictures of Luke and Ella.)

I hefted our Christmas tree into place in the living room and decorated it. Of course Luke and Ella helped to un-decorate pretty much every day after. Whenever I would catch them in the act, they always tried to play it very casual. Well, I wasn't born yesterday. The ornaments got higher and higher each time I put them back on.

We didn't know if we would be going to AZ for Christmas since Clifton's back was so bad and the trip would be hard for him. But, he made the sacrifice for me since I hadn't seen my family for about 6 months. And, he kinda likes them too. Luke and Ella had a wonderful time being escorted around by all of their older cousins. Luke and Ella are numbers 16 and 17 in the line up of 19 grandchildren my parents have, and they were all there. Every night Luke and Ella were so exhausted. It was great!

One night before Christmas, Santa came to visit. All the kids loved it. Luke was persuaded to sit on his lap. Ella wouldn't even get close. But after Santa left, that's all Ella and Luke talked about. "Santa bye-bye." And "Ho, ho, ho!"

It's a tradition in my family to act out the nativity story. The adults are all relieved there are plenty of grandchildren to fill the parts. My dad reads the story and my mom gets the kids in costumes and cues them for their entrances.

We saw Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus. Played by Jason, Ashley and baby Jared.

We heard the angels proclaim and sing of Jesus' birth (played by Brock, Hailey, Emily and Kaylee).

We saw the shepherds with their flocks (played by Sariah and Nathan; Luke was a shepherd, Ella opted-out).

And we watched as the wise men presented gifts to the baby Jesus.

Some were a little more excited about the performance than others.

Then my sister-in-law and her daughters sang a song she wrote. It was beautiful. My niece, Kaylee, was mesmerized.

Christmas morning was exciting and thrilling for everyone, from what I hear. We slept through it. I was sick during the night and kept Clifton up. So, we passed on the early morning present opening since our kids were still asleep and wouldn't care anyway. By the time we got up with the kids, the cousins were ready to help us open our presents. It was a little crazy. We didn't get many good pictures, but we have the memories, right?

When we got back home, we had a belated Christmas with Clifton's family. Luke and Ella got a wagon from Grandpa and Grandma. They love it, although we didn't really capture their enthusiasm on film. Aunt Stephanie pulled then around and around. I think Luke would have slept in it that first night if we hadn't hidden it in the basement when we got home which is where it will stay until the weather improves. We're looking forward to that!

Well, November has come and gone in a blur. But, here are a few highlights:

Ella finally got her fourth molar. And boy was it a beast! She was a little frazzled for a few days. Still no incisors, but she can chew pretty darn well with four molars now.

My brother Mark and his family came to stay with us for a few days. We loved it! It snowed while they were here, and being from Arizona, they couldn't pass up the chance to play in the "white stuff" and touch it and taste it and really get to know it (at least for a few minutes until they got cold).

We got Luke and Ella all bundled up in their snowsuits and boots. They were not pleased with the situation. Too bulky, too restricting, too not-my-style for them, I guess. They pretty much just stood around and pouted or cried.

We went to a children's museum with Mark's family. The kids loved it! They have some great exhibits with farm animals, little houses, cars, a grocery store and even a helicopter on the roof. Ella and Luke both got to drive it. Yikes!

This Fall season has been so much fun with the kids. Last year they were too young to enjoy most of the seasonal treats and activities. But this year, they really made up for it.

We went to a pumpkin patch with another little friend and saw pun-kins as far as the eye could see.

Ella displays her "act natural" look.

There was a cool old tractor, which Luke had no trouble finding. He thoroughly inspected it (for what, I'm not sure).

Then they climbed on back and found all kinds of squash.

They picked their favorites.

But, some squash are just more desirable than others.

Then, a trip through a hay maze.

Luke leading the way, of-course.

Good thing Mommy could see over the top. I hate corn mazes, but hay mazes aren't so bad when you're over 4 feet tall.

We found some friendly witches later in the month (although Ella wasn't so sure they were friendly). The the weather was still very nice.

Gardner Village is a great place to visit if you've never been.

They turned 18 months. Wow, they're getting big!

Don't they look so mature?

And we finished off the month with the big trick-or-treating extravaganza!

Ella was Dorothy, and Luke was the (Cowardly) Lion. We never said cowardly to him.

Clifton was supposed to be the Scarecrow and I was going to be the Wicked Witch. But, lucky for Clifton, it didn't work out.

We went trick-or-treating to a few houses in the neighborhood. They had a pretty good time even though they had no idea what they were doing.

In fact, they wanted to go out again. Luke would not take off his Lion costume, but he did want his sweater off. So, he was a ferocious lion with skinny, white arms.

They each got to eat one piece of candy from their bags, and Mommy and Daddy saved the rest.

Luke discovered an absolute obsession with corn on the cob. He devours it! Here's how his process works:

Step 1: Take as big a bite as possible when you have a new cob. Get the maximum amount of kernels in your mouth while there are no bare patches to worry about.

Step 2: Mmmm, enjoy.

Step 3: Once you've got kernel patches, you've really got to scope out the best place to bite to achieve maximum kernelocity. It's serious business.

Step 4: Dig in.

No, I mean, really, dig in! Trust me folks, he's a machine. He could go like this all day.

Step 5: Present the eaten cob to mom to redeem for a new cob.

Ella discovered she liked corn as well. However, her method is a tad different:

Step 1: Hold the cob up-right, in a vertical line, perpendicular to the floor. (That's exactly how she explained it to me)

Step 2: Delicately nibble a kernel off the top

Step 3: Present the kernel to mom (not for more corn) for applause.

Yes, it's true. It's September again. Well, let's just pretend it is because I can't pass up posting these pictures, and they're from September. Once they're posted, we'll fly through October and be right where we should be in November. No harm done, right?

One of the games Ella and Luke still love to play is Peek-A-Boo. We play this every day at lunch time and dinner time as Mommy is getting their plates ready. It's a great time killer. The louder the scream at the end, the better.

Ella's got it all down pretty well.

Luke, still has a hard time covering his eyes. But, he's getting better.

These are some cute pictures that really show off their little personalities. Luke is a thinker and generally a little more mellow than Ella.

But he's such a happy boy too—a Daddy's boy for sure.

Ella is the princess and she lets everyone know it. She loves to squeal and scream and be dramatic in every way.

She loves to dance and twirl. And she is definitely a Mommy's girl. (Although, no picture to prove it right here. Sorry.)

In September, Luke got to ride a pony for the first time. I think he's on his way to becoming a real cowboy. I mean, what cowboy doesn't wear a Hawaiian shirt when he rides? Boots are out. Sandals are in. It's the new look in Western wear. Mommy taught him how to hold on to the saddle horn, as Daddy would have no clue.

He did pretty well, although seemed a bit nervous during the whole ride.

The pony was very docile. I think he was half asleep.

Ella and Luke got post cards from their Mimi (grandma) from out of state. Ella loved to "read" them over and over.

Although, she did wonder we she didn't get the pink kitty card. Thanks for sending them, Mimi. (Ignore the outfit, folks—it was a rough morning.)

Happy September!

Luke and Ella turned 16 months this August. They're running, talking up a storm, trying to eat with utensils (not going so well), and getting into lots of trouble. And we're enjoying every minute of it. It's so entertaining to watch them grow and development. They learn new things every day, it seems.

Luke is so curious and inquisitive. He loves to take things apart, open drawers, doors, and cabinets. He also loves to screw the handles and knobs off drawers and dressers. If he can get into the bathroom, he goes straight for the baby shampoo and toothpaste. I was just thinking the other day that if he has a few seconds, he could really do a number on our carpet armed with those two items. And what do you know, the very next day as I was changing Ella's diaper, he had about 30 seconds and put them to good use. He opened the bathroom door (problem #1 to fix), climbed on the toilet (climbing is scary), grabbed the baby shampoo (I know, it could have been something much worse), found a nice hidden corner so as not to be noticed, unscrewed the lid on the shampoo (darn those newly dexterous fingers) and started dumping the shampoo on the carpet. All done with a great amount of stealth and craftiness. Honestly, he didn't make a peep. But, that's usually my first clue that he's up to something. I noticed the alarming silence and immediately began the hunt. I found him hiding behind the guest bed, not visible from the hall (he's too smart.) He knew he was in trouble, but I could tell he was so pleased to get away with it for a few seconds. And it is the first really naughty thing he's done. I couldn't get too upset. We just took the shampoo back to the bathroom and closed the door, again.

Luke loves to do the actions for "Patty-Cake" and "Itsy-Bitsy Spider." He loves his blanket that Mimi gave him and always sleeps with it. He still loves books. Luke still loves his "Signing Time" videos. He really picks it up quickly these days.

He signs: duck, dog, cat, giraffe, lion, tiger, horse, bird, cheese, milk, water, outside, bean, melon, apple, cereal, more, cracker, grapes, rain, thunder, wind, sky, bug, flower, bath, wash hands, brush teeth, rock, train, bike, car, airplane, please, thank you.

He says: duck, quack, kitty, meow, moo, hello, milk, juice (juuuuuu), outside (side-side), shoes, go, Mimi, Papa, momma, dada, all done (ah-don), truck, tractor, airplane (hair-pay), cracker, moon, sun, sky, bug, apple, peach, grapes, nose, eyes, mouth, teeth, knee, night-night (nigh-nigh), rock, Amen (men-men), share, turn (as in "my turn"), ball, baby, bike, slide, no, diaper.

He's a very good eater. Both Luke and Ella like to try to eat with a spoon or fork. But, often can't get anything on the spoon. And if they do, they can't get a good aim at their mouth. It's a pretty messy process still. They often revert back to fingers, while holding the utensil in the other hand. But, I try to let them try at least one meal a day. Luke loves peaches, bananas, cantaloupe, grapes, green beans, yogurt and peas. And when I say "loves", I mean, he'd eat them all day every day if I let him.

He has all his teeth. His molars and eye teeth (that's 8 teeth total) all came in at the same time. Poor kid. It was not fun. So he had all his teeth before he turned 16 months. The dentist was impressed.

His favorite thing is to be outside. His new favorite fascination is with tractors, trucks, trains, computers, and the slides at the park. He climbs up the stairs and goes down the slide all by himself and gets such a kick out of it. Such a boy!

Ella is our girly-girl. She is a talker, we just aren't sure what language she speaks. She jabbers and giggles all day. She's a very expressive girl. Really happy, or really sad. She also loves to do the actions for "Patty-Cake" and "Itsy-Bitsy Spider." She loves to dance in circles and surprisingly, doesn't seem to get too dizzy. She runs to grab her shoes when I say, "outside." She loves to walk outside and go up and down the stairs at the playground. However, she does not like to swing or go down the slides, just likes to climb stairs and walk around at the park. Not a high-adventure girl. But that's more than okay with mom and dad. She does love to be chased. Ever since she's been a tiny baby and aware that there's another baby around. She's always gotten a thrill out of him moving toward her, whether he meant to or not. Now, he can send her screaming giddily down the hall with one step in her direction. And he doesn't even have to follow. She never looks back. She just loves the idea that someone is after her.

She is also a good eater. She loves strawberries, grapes, raspberries, cheese, yogurt and green beans. Although cheese is the all-time fave. She's my little mouse. They both love oatmeal and yogurt mixed together. They've eaten this every day for breakfast for the past 5 or 6 months. And they never get tired of it. Every morning they whine for it until the spoon hits their tongue. And then again if I don't shovel it in fast enough. (I haven't let them try the spoon on their own at breakfast time yet; maybe soon.)

Ella loves Signing Time too. However, not quite as obsessed with it as Luke is.

She can sign: dog, cat, giraffe, horse, bird, cheese, grapes, milk, water, bean, cereal, more, cracker, wash hands, rock, please, thank you, flower, bug, wind.

She can say: duck, quack, kitty, meow, moo, hi, outside (side), upstairs (ushare) shoes, go, Mimi, Papa, momma, dada, all done (ah-don), nose, eyes, mouth, teeth, knee, Amen (Ehhhhh), ball, car, baby, bug, cheese, grapes, juice (juuuuu), no, yes.

Although, I'm sure she's completely fluent in some language I'm not familiar with. I just haven't figured it out yet. Her favorite word these days is "Hi." Every time she or someone else walks into the room she has to say, "Hiiiiii!" It's pretty cute. One day she got stuck on "Hi kitty". But it was more like, "Hiiiii keeeey. Hiiiii keeeeey. Hiiiiii keeeeey," for about 5 minutes.

This month she had a high fever one day and didn't feel well at all. She just wanted to sit on our lap all day and refused to be dressed. We could hardly get her to eat anything but a few grapes, some cheese (of course) and water. She finally let me put her down on the couch (she was so hot to hold, both of us were sweaty) and she finally fell asleep with her grapes and water. Poor girl, it was a pretty dramatic show of lethargy.

When she was born and in the NICU, the nurses all called her "the princess" and "drama queen" because she could get so upset so quickly, but then settle down pretty quickly too. Any little thing could cause an upset Ella, especially her feeding tube. She pulled it out several times a day in the NICU and so also earned the nickname "Crafty." Little did I know, the drama queen part would stick with her. Thankfully up to this point, it's only her brother that's "crafty." (This picture is not so cute, but it demonstrates her dramatic, "wo is me" face she has pulled since the very beginning.)

Ella is a bit behind in the teeth department. She had only 6 for a long time, and then the beginning of August got one upper molar. Then a week or two later got a third bottom tooth in the front. The last week of August another top molar popped through. So, she has a total of nine. But the fourth bottom front tooth should be in any day now. Her lack of teeth doesn't slow her down. She eats everything Luke eats.

We don't want summer to end. Although, sadly, we know it must. So, to ease the pain, I went bargain shopping for snowsuits and boots and found these cute little numbers at Kid to Kid. Aren't they so great? (I couldn't get Luke to stay in his snowsuit. It was 90 degrees outside.) It's the only reason I can stand the thought of winter coming, I'll get to see them dressed cute and cozy—barely able to walk and adorably squishy.

We've had so much fun going to the Zoo, working in the yard, and playing at the playground this month.

Let's hear it for Summer and being 16 months! It only happens once.

So, my favorite person in the whole world is turning 30 today! Yep, Clifton hit the big 3-0. And, as a tribute to him and his 30 years of excellence, I'm actually writing a current article that matches its intended date. (That means he really turned 30 today.)

Clifton is an amazing husband and father. I couldn't ask for anything more. Ella and Luke adore him! As do I. But, many of you may not know the man I married. Let me introduce you.

He's such a charmer!

He can be quite studious.

He's been known to play baseball, and now stickball, from time to time. And, has hit quite a few homeruns in his day. But, with a body like that, what else would you expect?

When he was younger, he was quite the lady's man. As you can imagine.

He always dreamed of playing basketball for the Utah Jazz. He practiced for hours, daily. Until his dreams changed to working for Apple.

And now his dreams are more along the lines of getting an uninterrupted night's sleep.

What makes Clifton happy: Family, Apple products, the latest electronics in general, Coldstone Ice Cream, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, root beer, popcorn, plenty of time to design awesome websites, figuring out tricky code, watching NOVA and Modern Marvels. Yeah, he's kind of a nerd. But he's so cute! And I love him.

Happy Birthday, honey!

So let's talk about the curl hawk— which is kinda like the faux hawk. Remember back in the day when our moms used to make us girls (and sometimes boys—so sad) have a curl down the middle of our head? That was the trendy baby do for decades.

Well, I had a little fun during Ella and Luke's bath recreating that do. What do you think?

As many of you have heard, we got the kids the Cozy Coupe, the best selling car in America. Clifton put it together on a Saturday night after the kids went to sleep. We went to church, came back and ate lunch and put the kids down for a nap. Luke woke up first from his nap, so he got to be the first driver.

He was so thrilled!

Doesn't he look like a little man, proud of his first sports car?

He checked it out from every angle.

Even from the oops-I-just-tipped-it-over-while-I-was-inside-it-but-I-don't-care-because-this-is-sooo-cool! angle.

Then Ella woke up and wanted to check out the new car.

I pulled Luke out and put Ella in and she quickly started her inspection as well.

But, Luke kept trying to squeeze (and I do mean squeeze) himself back in the car. For a while, Ella was so enamored by the car that she didn't even mind.

She could only take so much and it finally got to her. (Who can blame her?)

I decided to try to get Ella to push Luke in the car, because it really is only a one-seater. That worked pretty well.

Then I tried to get Luke to push Ella. Nope. He wouldn't have it. He had to be in the driver's seat. (Just like a man.) And Ella got smashed again. Poor girl.

As most girls and women, Ella loves shoes! After "kitty," "mom," and "hi," I think it was one of her first words. She's not so much into the fashion part of shoes (as will be obvious by the pictures) but she just loves to wear them. Lately she's been wanting to wear Luke's shoes for some reason. Apparently in "Toddlertropolis" his shoes are cooler. She'll find his shoes and bring them to me and cry until I put them on her. I've tried to tell her they do nothing for her cute little cankles, but she doesn't seem to mind.

At the end of June, when it finally stopped raining and actually started to get warmer here, we started working out in our yard. We got out the kids' play yard (which they haven't been in since they were tiny and slept together in the top bassinet) and put it on the porch while we worked. Hanging out in the play yard was quite a novelty for them. They loved it!

When we brought it back inside we took the pad out of the play yard and put it on the floor. They played on that tiny little 2x3 pad in the wide open living room for probably 20 minutes. It was like a baby magnet. Since they've learned how to crawl they've never stayed in one place for more than 60 seconds. It was crazy the power this play yard pad had in keeping them in one small place for a long period of time.

They were really into doing the "almost somersault." Who knew we had gymnasts in the family?

If only I could come up with a powerfully captivating kid magnet every day! I might actually get my house cleaned.
