Labor and Delivery

Posted by Clifton Labrum on April 8, 2008

4:30am — Jenn awoke this morning with lots of fluid coming out. Looks like her water broke.

6:00am — We arrived at the hospital and the nurse is now conducting some tests. Both baby heart beats are normal, and they have confirmed that it's amniotic fluid coming out. Jenn is now getting IV fluids.

8:30am — The nurses spoke with Dr. Macy (Jenn's doctor) and she ordered that everything get started. Jenn received her epidural, though contractions are still inconsistent. She was administered some penicillin, but her hand started getting a little red, so they discontinued it. It's likely that they won't have to do it again, they just need to confirm that her Strep B test was negative with Dr. Macy's office. We're now just waiting around to see what happens with contractions. Dr. Macy should be here shortly to check on Jenn.

8:36am — Clifton realizes he's a really big nerd for live-blogging all this. More details to follow, though they may be inconsistent depending on how the day pans out.

9:45am — Still no significant contractions so they're starting her on pitocin (sp?) to encourage some uterine participation. Now we just wait and relax. Time for a nap.

10:45am — Pitocin dosage increased. The cervix is dilated to about 4cm and she's 90% effaced. The epidural is still working like a champ. I'll never understand why a woman would ever want to deliver naturally.

2:45pm — We've had some great progress through the day. Contractions are still inconsistent and barely noticeable with the epidural. Jenn is dilated to 8cm now, so we've got just 2cm to go until it's pushing time.

5:00pm — Jenn is fully dilated so now we're just going to wait for the staff to do a C-section on another patient, then they'll move to us and Dr. Macy will come and try to get these kids out vaginally. The babies' heart beats are still looking good. Jenn is growing less and less comfortable with every passing minute and is starting to feel drained and exhausted. Her body has been working hard all day and she hasn't had anything significant to eat since last night.

6:20pm — The nurse just came in and said it's time to get the show on the road. It's time for delivery. Various doctors and nurses will be filling the room in the next few minutes.

8:22pm — After 2 hours of pushing, Ella has arrived!

8:28pm — Right after Ella, Luke has arrived!

9:45pm — Both babies are doing well. One (I haven't heard which yet) is 5lb 4oz, the other was 5lb 2oz. They're working with their breathing and eating right now and are currently in the special care nursery with the nurses. We'll post pictures and any additional news tomorrow.

Wow, what a long day. Congratulations to both of you. I suppose on a day like this it wouldn't be right of me to be upset that Jenn couldn't hold out until Friday so I would have won the gift card. Oh well. Best of luck in this new chapter of your lives. Very cool.

Congratulations!!! I am so excited for you guys. What a long day! You deserve some rest. Though, I have my doubts that those little ones will let you get much.

I heard rumor yesterday that you were at the hospital, but when night came and I hadn't had an update, I decided to check your blog. I'm so glad that I did. It was fun to read the updates and know how things were going. I can't wait to see pictures. You and your little family are in my prayers.
